    Surrounding Areas
    Although the shipyard is named for Portsmouth, New Hampshire, it is located on the Kittery, Maine, side of the Piscataqua River. Portsmouth is one of the larger cities in New Hampshire, while Kittery is a small town of under 4,500 residents. Both cities are situated at the mouth of the river where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. There is more off-base housing on the New Hampshire side of the shipyard; suburban areas include Newington, Greenland, North Hampton, Stratham, Exeter, Durham, and Dover. Durham is well known in the area for being home to the University of New Hampshire. In Maine, families may choose to live in South Eliot, Eliot, Kittery or York, which are all within a 20 minute drive of base.

    About the Installation
    The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is also referred to as the Portsmouth Navy Yard and is used for remodeling and repairing the Navy's ships. The Coast Guard also uses this as home port for the cutters USCGC Reliance, the USCGC Tahoma, and the USCGC Campbell. The shipyard is located in Kittery, Maine, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and is the oldest continuously-operating shipyard in the United States Navy.
